Catazine : An interactive magazine/catalog focusing on expressive art and poetry.
When I was in my late teens I created what I called a "Catazine", which was an interactive magazine and catalog combined. The focus was expressive art and poetry, more specifically... as far away from commercial "crap" as possible. I was looking for something deeper, something real, from one's soul and not just surface level stuff.
It was called, "Blu", or maybe "Blew", I hadn't quite decided. The Catazine looked like a magazine, with editorials and pictorials. But it was a “catalog” because all the products shown were available for purchase. All of the items sold within the Catazine were created by the “people”. The focus was on apparel, with poetry and art, along with a jewelry section. My family is in the jewelry business. Back then it was called “The Gold Rush”, so I was also designing my own jewelry and planning to work with them as well.
The gallery below has the original plan. It was typed on an old typewriter that I had bought at a secondhand shop. I loved the weight of the keys. They felt heavy, like there was a purpose behind every click. You’ll see that the words were then cut out and taped onto another piece of paper. The “old school” copy and paste. Hahahaha
The concept, and my intention behind the Catazine are values that I still carry with me today. My purpose has always been to bring people together through creativity, provoke thought, and create an open forum for people to discuss hard questions and find ways to interpret the world around us. While also providing hope and comfort through difficult times. Every project has, and will always be based on what is real, honest and true. So that we can get to the actual solutions.
The Catazine still lives on, only through different channels. Check out Episode One, “Imperfection is Beautiful” on The Creative YouTube Channel. https://www.youtube.com/@thecreative_heatherwalker
Note: “The Gold Rush” is now called, “Walker & Son”. My brother, E.J. Walker is an amazing custom jeweler designer. Please check out his work as well. https://www.instagram.com/walkerandsoninc/
